6. Place two of the top bands right sides together. Sew along both sides 3/8″ from edge. Insert the handles between the top bands, aligning the sides of the handle against the side seams and the ends of the handle with the top edge of the top bands. Sew along the top of the two bands 3/8″ from the edge, securing the handle in place. Turn the band right side out. Repeat for the back band.

7. Fold the bottom edges of the top bands under 3/8″. Insert 3/8″ of the top edge of the bag between the top band and stitch in place with green thread. To finish, sew two more horizontal lines along the bottom of the top band, also with green thread.

In step 1, make four patchwork strips measuring 4 1/2″ x 19 1/8″ each; three of the strips will be trimmed to the appropriate length when in place. Attach the strips to the cushion top in the order shown, laying each strip on the central square, wrong sides together, trimming to the correct length, and sewing in place with a seam allowance of 1/2″.
